National Day Parade 2017

My NDP journey has been an amazing experience. From the trainings at Nee Soon Camp to The Float @ Marina Bay, while having to stand under the scorching sun, it was all worth it to make it to the main contingent. Throughout this journey, I made new friends from different schools and we would use our break time to share our experiences in our respective units. Unfortunately, good things must come to an end, and on 9th August 2017, I marched out into The Float, feeling proud that I am able to participate in the National Day Parade. This experience brings me out of my comfort zone and I definitely learnt useful leadership skills that can be brought back to my unit in the future. I hope to see my juniors having the same opportunities as me, and taking part in such events in the future.

Leadership and Mentoring Skills Course 2017

During our Leadership and Mentoring Skills Course (LMSC), we went through a Methods of Instructions (MOI) lecture to understand the various ways on giving instructions. It was very interesting to me as I now realise the way I give instructions determines the amount of understanding others will have. It can help me to help my cadets truly understand what my squadmates and I are trying to teach, say and act during our training time. The lesson on how to teach, and what position to place the cadets in, was really informative and provides a platform for us to experiment with our individual teaching methods.

Learning about Goal Setting was an eye opener for me. It helps me clearly state what specific goal I want to work, and how to work on it in the most effective way possible. For a group, having a common goal would give rise to commitment and willingness to sacrifice for work and the promise of work that is not half-hearted and close to nothing. It allows my squad to work towards something productive and achievable in the future and for our cadets to understand why they are doing what we tell them and be willing to learn and improve to reach their goal.

Our instructor taught us the importance of effective communication in the most creative way. With a piece of A4 paper, we were instructed to tear it in various places, however, the challenge was we had to follow the instructions based on only what she say. We were not allowed to look at what she does. Unsurprisingly, none of us managed to have the same final product as hers. This teaches us that everyone perceives instructions differently, therefore it is important for us to know and understand how to communicate effectively, to prevent miscommunication and confusion.

Campcraft Competition 2016

Training for Campcraft Competition was one of the best experience I had in Bowen NPCC. It taught me teamwork, diligence, and perseverance. A competition where more than 100 schools compete for top 10 positions. My team and I trained twice a week, in preparation for this competition. I believe we should always push ourselves to the limit. My team and I put in our best effort in the pitch and I have to say, it turned out OK. From the first horn blow to the very last second, we definitely did the best we could. Standing outside our boundary, after the final horn blow indicating the end of the competition, we look back at our hard work, and realize that it was not our best work. We were quite disappointed. However, our instructors and cadet supporters continued cheering for us. Although the final work was not what we hoped for, I believe that as long as we had fun, and all of us put in the best effort, the team did well. Results day came, and Bowen NPCC was in the 68th position. It definitely was very disappointing, not only to myself, but the whole team. Despite being in the 68th position, I knew that our team did the best we could, and our officers and instructors were proud of us, no matter the results.

Values in Action (VIA) - 30 January 2015

Our VIA project is a visit to Compassion Children Care Centre and using that opportunity to let the children there to have fun while instilling values in them.

Through the journey as a VIA Champion, I have learnt that spreading joy is a wonderful thing. Before this experience, my impression of spreading joy to others is that it is only beneficial for them. But this event taught me that when I spread joy to others, I am also standing at the receiving end as well.

Although the task was carried out successfully, there were some hiccups along the way that impeded our way. The first  obstacle I met was the fact that I cannot really communicate well with the beneficiary's children so the passing down of instruction ended u being less efficient. Another challenge I met was to plan games that are fun yet simple for the children. As they children are still young, a game with complicated instructions will only confuse them, thus this reduces the level of fun they will have.

In my opinion, I fond the implementation of our VIA project went rather well as we managed to fulfill the task we were given, which was mainly spreading joy to the children at the beneficiary.

Although the entire project did not go as planned, we improvised and managed to carry out the project smoothly and thus managed to bring joy to the children there.

Th VIA champions program had equipped me with enough confidence and skills to be able to lead and implement another project to a certain extent. Although our project was carried out rather smoothly, the project was carried out as a team. Therefore I feel that if I were to carry out this project alone, it would most likely fail because every individual's strength is vital to the success of the project.

Values in Action (VIA) - 30 January 2015

5 months of VIA may not seem like a long duration; however, this journey has taught me lessons and values that are valuable for a lifetime. Starting from all the planning sessions, we have learnt the importance of planning and empathizing before carrying out our VIA. It was not an easy task deciding on the VWO that we are going to work with, contacting them and coming to a consensus concerning certain issues.

As the date of implementation closes in, we must start considering the limitations of the VWO, which is the Compassvale Children Care Centre, and brainstorming on activities to be carried out to fulfil our purpose. Needless to say, we would love to bring joy and care to our friends in the centre. We have also faced challenges in the process of preparation, like miscommunication, lack of interest in some children, and suitable time for meetings.

I am glad to say that we managed to overcome our problems and performed our VIA on the scheduled day, with my sec 4 CCA mates and sec 3 juniors. During the VIA, we had lots of fun interacting with the little cheeky kids there, helping them with their school works and playing games. Their smiles are a reflection of our hard work paid off and the success of our VIA project. Just like us, they were so delightful when we gave out the gifts that we prepared, to them. as a leader of my CCA, I am pleased to see my CCA mates working together, with one goal in mind.

At the end of the day, what really matters is not having the most creative VIA, but the impact we have left in the hearts of the children in the centre. The knowledge and experience we have gained from this process will be cherished and apply to our daily lives, and future VIA projects.

Crime Prevention Corner

Earlier this year, we started a Crime Prevention Corner to remind the school staffs and students on the dangers and prevention measures of certain crimes. We changed up the different crime prevention message once every 2-3 months, and we placed it at the Bowen NPCC Notice Board.

Sec 3 Squad 2014

Police Youth Ambasador - 23 November 2014

We went around the car park to spread the message to the drivers of keeping their belongings safe and taking care of their valuables. I found that this project is very meaningful and it really benefits us and the community as not only does it encourage the drivers to be responsible for their own belongings and valuables, but also minimizing the chances of theft and also allowing us to have a chance to experience what some policemen re always doing, which is communicating and advising drivers on car theft. Thus, this is definitely a great experience for us, especially for me as I am not comfortable talking to strangers at first.

If we could do this project again, i would feel that we could give stickers that says "DO NOT FORGET YOUR VALUABLES" to drivers instead of giving brochures as drivers wouldn't like reading brochures and would tend to throw it away without even reading it but they can paste the stickers at their car screen and they would remember not to leave their valuables (including cash cards) in their cars whenever they see the sticker, which I think is a more effective way. I also feel that we could perhaps go to a multi storey car park (with more cadets), as there will be more drivers there as compared to the number of drivers at the car park we went. This is because the car park is alredy full and no drivers wll stop their care in that car park, so we didn't have the chance to advice them. Also, we could just wear our PT Kit, instead of wearing our berets as most drivers quickly ran away as they thought we were actual policemen.

Lastly, through this project, I learnt that I should be more confident with myself and not be afraid to speak to strangers as we were trying to help them I also felt very happy as I didn't dare to speak to the drivers at first, but after a few tries, I became more fluent in speaking to them, and when the driver spoke in mandarin, I even help my non-Chinese friend to speak to them, therefore I had really benefited from this project and I did not regret taking part in it.
